Meet one of Norlina's finest, Admiral Kirkland H. Donald, born and raised in Norlina. After his childhood and adolescence years in Norlina, Kirk entered the U.S. Naval Academy where he graduated in 1975. He served in the submarine force on four vessels, then was promoted to flag rank and took command of U.S. and allied submarine operations in the Mediterranean in 1999. In September 2003, Vice Admiral Donald took command of NATO submarine operations in the western Atlantic. A year later, he received his four star designation and became Director of Naval Reactors, a joint program between the Navy and U.S. Department of Energy that overseas the safety and effectiveness of all nuclear propulsion plants on Navy subs and aircraft carriers. On September 8, 2007 the Norlina VFW Post 4096 and friends of Kirk dedicated a Monument in his honor at the VFW Hall in Norlina. |
